World Environment Day is an important instrument used by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness about the environment and encourage political attention and action at the world level. This anniversary is seen as an opportunity for everyone to be part of a global action in voicing protection of the planet, sustainable use of natural resources, and eco-friendly lifestyles
History
World Environment Day was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1972 [2] to mark the opening of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment that took place between 5-16 June 1972 in Stockholm. [3]
Support world leaders
Various media and celebrities are encouraging the World Environment Day Celebration by supporting and participating in it. [4] Goodwill ambassadors from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), including supermodel Gisele Bündchen, send a worldwide warning message to take action on World Environment Day 2014 by joining one of their teams to tackle climate change. [5] Their call to action, "Bottled Messages," asks everyone worldwide to join the greetings of a celebrity team and make a difference by pledging to take action in support of World Environment Day, culminating globally on June 5, 2014. On World Environment Day on 5 June 2015, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi planted a tree at his official residence on Race Course Road 7, Kerala. [7] [8]
Media campaigns
Community Radio Stations (CRS) throughout Nepal launches campaigns related to this. All broadcasts on national radio and television are replaced with a variety of information and slogans about the environment. The Government of Nepal launched various cooperation programs with UNESCO, sending Gurkha Army from their barracks to the streets to clean up the environment and support the greening program in which all media personnel also gathered to cover it directly.
Zee News launched the campaign 'My Earth, My Duty' (My Earth, My Obligations). The campaign was recorded in the Limca Book of Records for a new effort: planting more than 7.3 million trees in a day in 34 cities and 250,000 villages on August 25, 2010. NDTV launched the Greenathon Campaign in 2008 and became India's first national campaign to save the environment
Children's efforts
In the Republic of Nepal all Grade 1 to Level A students are required to attend reforestation programs in their respective areas under the supervision of the Nepalese Government and SOS Children's Villages. Many drawing and artistic competitions are held on environmental day. The Nepalese government provides scholarships to 15 students from across the city contributing greatly to the environment; The main elected are Madhesi, a backward society in Nepal. In 2012, Project Earth, an online ecosystem platform in collaboration with Rio + 20 and launched World Environment Day Global School Contest 2012 to raise awareness among today's youth; Every country has a winner. On the World Environment Day celebration in June 2013, "Earth Anthem", by a poet diplomat named Abhay Kumar, was released at an event held by the Council on Cultural Relations of India in New Delhi by Kapil Sibal and Shashi Tharoor, India. [11] The song is available in eight languages including all official languages of the United Nations, namely Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.
